Fascinating. Very well written and constructed. Though I sort of guessed the outcome at one late point, I was still taken with the way the story concludes and the protagonist's explanation to himself. As though Chiang was channeling a bit of Einstein into understandable terms people in the BC era would understand.

Imaginative and creative view of building the tower with means of tools and knowledge. The author saw the time and place with understanding.
A great read, and I learned more history! Will get more of his books.
It is a very impressive view on the Tower of Babylon story. It give insight in to human behavior, and the extremes man will go through to please their god or gods.
I have only recently discovered Ted Chiang. I suppose like so many others, it occurred through the motion picture "Arrival" - as I researched the author behind the script, which I absolutely loved. Since then I've been reading everything from Ted Chiang I can get my hands on. He's a sci-fi author that takes a philosophical approach on reality what it means to think of things in and all around us. Of the mind and language and meaning and time. I suppose we'd say he's a conceptual writer. A brilliant one that makes us think every step of the way and beyond.

Tower of Babylon is the first short story featured in the book "Stories of your Life". It's a biblical tale with a twist ours as a circular world ending right back at the beginning. Adresses men's pride and perspective of the world. Men's certainties and hopes. Men's methods and materials. Takes the hero of the tale as the whole of humankind and has him know - through labor and perseverance and hardness and awe - he's place as a feeble insufficient cognoscenti of creation.

Men want to reach the vault in the sky. They build a tower - through the centuries - to get there. To get to the manor of God. To know God's view of His creation. Men build the tower and inhabit the tower and become prisoners of the tower. As men ascend, proud and certain of their endeavor, we get a taste of the live in the tower. Of the internal awe the characters experience, their struggle and purpose, along with the strangeness that comes from inhabiting a self-made prison - for the tower is as much a physical prison as a mental one. The ascendancy of men through the tower - a trip that challenges their space and time and inner referentials - makes us question - not the magnificent engeneering proficiency and spiritual commitment of men, but their complacent nature having themselves live a narrow slit of reality because of a fanatical vision of the world and of themselves.

Babel as the loss of meaning and place through reaching for one and the other.

Brilliant. Required reading.
Interesting premise. This author does not write like anyone else. He is a true original. This story is most enveloping, and at the end you are left to think it over for days. You do not read Ted Chiang for entertainment.
Another excellent short story by Ted Chiang. In this case, I was able to buy the story on . Sadly, some of his other short stories are not on .
If you love the art of short story writing, this is one you should read.
Chiang uses a Biblical story, the Tower of Babel, as the foundation for a luminous mediation on humanity's struggle to reach above itself.
