History of Hernando Cortez eBook John S C Abbott Reviews
This "History of Hernando Cortez" is an interesting book for several reasons.
Firstly, it is a well-told, fair history of Hernando Cortez, the "conqueror" of Mexico. The author is scrupulous with regards to his analysis of the wrongs done to the Mexican natives (possibly because he was also a pastor) at a time when the rights and humanity of natives of any continent were seldom acknowledged.
Secondly, he places his story within its time, from the perspective of the author's time. Books written today often are judgmental, applying today's standards of behavior and belief retroactively. It is also interesting to note that this was written shortly after the unpopular war with Mexico. Since Abbott studied at Bowdoin College he most likely held strong opinions against the war; it is possible that his sympathy for the native Mexicans was meant also to reflect opposition to the war with Mexico.
Thirdly, Hernando Cortes was an exceptional man in many ways. Setting aside the brutality to which he often resorted (typical of Spanish conquistadors and learned in the centuries-long wars between the Spanish and Moors), he was clearly a physically strong and rugged man, with a magnetic personality and superb leadership qualities. He is, to me, one of the most interesting men in all of history.
And, finally A note at the end of the book states that early editions of this book were credited to John S. C. Abbott (1805-1877). Later editions (including the one scanned for the Edition) were credited to Jacob Abbott (1803-1879). The title page shows that the book was copyrighted by Susan Abbott Mead in 1884. A little research discovered that John and Jacob were brothers, and collaborated on some books. Susan was John's daughter.
Having read a lot of Jacob Abbott's books (which I heartily recommend), I think the style of writing itself shows that the book was not written by Jacob. I found this little mystery an entertaining sidelight to a very good read.
